CEDAR RAPIDS – Cops arrested a juvenile after a Cedar Rapids shooting left a student shot in the crossfire.

As a result of the on-going investigation of the Cedar Rapids shooting incident occurring in the area of Elmhurst Drive NE and Hazel Drive NE on November 3, 2022, Cedar Rapids Police have arrested a juvenile male. Natorian Smith, 16, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested on charges directly related to his alleged involvement in the shooting incident in which an innocent, nearby college student, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the right forearm.

Charges on Smith include:

*Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon
*Willful Injury Resulting in Bodily Injury – Joint Criminal Conduct
*Going Armed with Intent
*Carrying Weapons on School Grounds
*Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime
*Reckless Use of a Firearm – Property Damage
*Possession of Dangerous and Loaded Firearms by Minors
*Persons Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons

Smith was already in custody at the Linn County Juvenile Detention on a probation violation stemming from the November 3, 2022 incident and was notified of the charges on November 10, 2022.

According to the criminal complaint:

“On November 3, 2022, Cedar Rapids Police were dispatched to a call of shots fired near Mount Mercy University on Elmhurst Dr. NE, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Upon arrival at that location, officers quickly learned that the alleged victim, … had been shot in the right forearm during an exchange of gunfire from two separate parties near the intersection K Ave. NE and Elmhurst Dr. NE. Cedar Rapids Police undertook an immediate investigation and collected video surveillance from the area that showed there was a mutual exchange of gunfire from three individuals driving a silver Chevy Cruze and two individuals on foot in the area. The defendant was also captured on video surveillance across the street from Garfield Elementary School property just moments before the shooting and on school grounds after the shooting. Other footage before the shooting revealed him to be potentially concealing an item believed to be the firearm he used. The defendant was 16 years-old at the time of these offenses. It was clear that the mutual gunfire exchanged in the incident resulted in the gunshot wound to (the victim).”

Through the investigation, it is clear this is a targeted incident between the two parties involved, occurred in a random location, and has no direct correlation nor immediate threat of danger to any educational institution or residents in the area, police claim.

There is an active, ongoing investigation. Anyone with information or video surveillance of the incident is asked to call the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491.
