Joan Montag, age 94 of West Bend, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the Palo Alto County Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday at the Divine Mercy Catholic Parish- Sts. Peter and Paul in West Bend. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass. Joan Laubenthal Montag the daughter of Dr. AJ and Rose (Dahlhauser) Laubenthal was born November 25, 1927. One of ten siblings she grew up in Emmetsburg and graduated from St. Ellen’s grade school, Emmetsburg High School and Emmetsburg Community College. As a young woman she worked in her father’s chiropractic office, the local pharmacy and bank. She obtained a teaching certificate and taught in Bode, Iowa for two years.
She married Raphael Montag on June 21, 1948 at St. Thomas Church in Emmetsburg. They resided on the family dairy farm east of West Bend where they raised their family of seven children. After thirty-two years they built a home in West Bend. Joan was always an active member in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Garfield Homemakers, a 4-H leader, a member of Drama Club and Quilt Club. Throughout her lifetime she was an accomplished seamstress, a writer, a voracious reader and conversationalist. She and Raphael shared a love of family memorabilia and antiques.
Joan is survived by her children: Carmen (Bruce) Balgeman, Denise (Robert) Wyland, Drs. R.Martin (Renee’) Montag, Kevin (Diane) Montag, Frank (Carla) Montag, Milissa (Matthew) Klebe, Albert (Joanne) Montag, sixteen grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, a still-born son, six siblings, and her daughter-in-law Carla Montag. Joan lived a busy long life blessed with good health and a wealth of love.
