Iowa man dies in prison after robbery conviction

IOWA CITY – An Iowa man died in prison after a robbery conviction.

Keyote Dean Smith was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after being admitted earlier in the week for an acute illness related to a chronic medical condition. An autopsy will be performed by the Johnson County Medical Examiner. Smith was 21 years old at the time of his death.

Smith had been serving a 10-year maximum term for the crime of Robbery 2nd Degree from Marshall County. His sentence began on October 30, 2020.
