OBIT: Gary “Bud” Ackerman

Gary “Bud” Ackerman, age 81 of Garner passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be 10:30 am on Wednesday at Lentz Funeral Home in Burt. Services will be live streamed on Lentz Funeral Home’s website: https://www.hdezwebcast.com/show/gary-dean-ackerman. Burial will take place at Burt Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Wednesday.

Gary Dean Ackerman, the son of Hiram “Ginny” and Muriel (Long) Ackerman was born on November 29, 1940 in Burt, Iowa. He graduated from Burt High School in 1959 and later attended Kansas Tech. After school, he served in the Army from 1960 to 1963. Gary worked for the Kansas DOT and was on the bridge crew. He loved driving trucks and moving dirt. In his free time, he could be found listening to country and gospel music. He also ran the sound system for the Sundusters Band. Another one of Gary’s favorite things was riding his motorcycle. He would often ride in “Run For The Wall”, a Vietnam Veteran charity foundation.

Left to cherish Gary’s memory are his daughter, Lisa Smith; grandson, Randall “Reese” Smith; sister, Roberta “Bobbie” (Don) Gifford; and brother-in-law, David Bunkofske. He is preceded in death by his significant other and soul mate of 32 years, Ruth Holcom; parents, Hiram “Ginny” and Muriel; and sisters, Delores Balzer and Linda Bunkofske.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s honor to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
