MASON CITY – A man was arrested today after shooting a person and a police invasion of a house in Mason City.
Mason City police say that on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at approximately 7:50 PM, officers responded to a shooting at 8th Street and North Van Buren Avenue. Witnesses at the scene provided a description and name of the suspect to responding officers. One person sustained a minor injury during the incident that did not require medical attention. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene.
During the investigation, Kalab Scott Van Scyoc, age 27, was identified as the shooter. Van Scyoc and the shooting victim are known parties to one another. Van Scyoc fled the scene on a bicycle with the firearm after the shooting.
At approximately 3:15 PM today, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of 8th Street SW in an attempt to locate Van Scyoc and take him into custody on outstanding arrest warrants. Van Scyoc was located at the residence during the execution of the warrant. Van Scyoc was taken into custody on the following charges:
- Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon – a class C felony
- Possession of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser – a class D felony
- Reckless Ues of a Firearm Causing Bodily Injury – a class D felony
- Discharge of a Firearm Inside City Limits – a simple misdemeanor
MCPD was assisted today in the execution of the search warrant by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force Special Operations Group and the Mason City Fire Department.
Van Scyoc was a witness in a notorious Mason City murder from back in 2016, when Larry Whaley killed Van Scyoc’s girlfriend, Samantha Teeter, using a gun.
