MORAVIA – NIACC freshman Bryce Malchow tied for 25th at the NJCAA North Central District Tournament on Sunday at the Preserve on Rathbun Lake Golf Course.
Malchow shot rounds of 79-82-81 – 242 in the two-day, three-round district tournament as NIACC placed 10th with a 328-344-329 – 1,001.
“It was a tough weekend of golf for us,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, “but I’m still proud of the guys for playing through a difficult spring season.
“I thought the guys approach (Sunday) was pretty good considering how disappointed we were after (Saturday), but we just couldn’t get anything jump started.”
Kirkwood was the district champion with a 302-300-293 – 895. Northeast CC was second with a 305-313-302 – 920 and Hawkeye CC was third with a 311-310-305 – 926.
Northeast CC’s Ty Heimes shot 74-77-68 – 219 and Kirkwood’s Kolby Shackelford shot 76-72-71 – 219 and the Eagles’ Brandon McCarty shot 72-74-73 – 219. Heimes won the individual district title by sinking a 30-foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole.
Also for the Trojans, Eric Ritter shot 81-91-81 – 253, Jack Barragy shot 83-89-82 – 254, Kai Nelles shot 85-86-85 – 256 and Bradley Vaith shot 89-87-88 – 264.
It was the final tournament for sophomores Barragy, Nelles and Vaith.
“I’m really going to miss sophomores Kai Nelles, Jack Barragy and Bradley Vaith,” Frenz said. “They are high quality people, excellent students and they gave me their all every time.
“I look forward to having Bryce Malchow back next year after a summer of more work on his game and just having a year under his belt. It’s always tough when the season comes to an end.”
