OBIT: Shirley Allen

Shirley Allen, age 85 of Pocahontas, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022 at the West Bend Health and Rehab Care Center in West Bend. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 10:30 AM at the Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Lentz Funeral Home in Humboldt. Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt is assisting the family.

Shirley Mae Auten was born July 14, 1936 on a farm in Laurens, Iowa. She was the youngest child of John and Ester Auten. She attended Pocahontas Schools. She married Ira Allen in 1957 at the Rolfe Methodist Church. They lived in Gilmore City, Lehigh and Humboldt.

She worked at the South Care Center in Humboldt. In 1996 they moved to a farm north of Pocahontas to take care of her brother until his death. In 1997 she lost her husband, Ira. She continued to live on the farm until 2005 when she moved into town.

She liked to go for long walks, reading, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. Shirley was a member of Hope Methodist Church and Charity Circle.

She is survived by two daughters: Sharon (Garth) Pflibsen of Dakota City and Susan (David) Sawdo of Woodridge, IL; two granddaughters: Jessica (Brady Koppen) Ubben of Algona and Nicole Sawdo of Woodridge, IL and three great grandsons: Griffin Ubben, Deegan Ubben and Beckham Koppen all of Algona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ester Auten; husband, Ira Allen; siblings: Donald Auten, Robert Auten, Earl Auten, Evelyn Shaw, Lucille Swanson and Lavon Zeman and a grandson, Lucas Pflibsen.
