OBIT: Richard “Dick” Heitz

Richard “Dick” Heitz, 71, of Charles City, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022 at the MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.

Visitation for Dick Heitz will be at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022. A private family funeral service will be held with Pastor Russ Leeper from Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Richard “Dick” Arthur Heitz, the son of Arthur and Elsie (Vetter) Heitz, was born November 20, 1950 in Charles City. He attended school in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1969.

Dick was united in marriage to Joyce Ferch on June 25, 1977 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The couple made their home in Charles City, were blessed with four sons: Adam, Ben, Cole and Drew and in the late 1980’s became guardians to Brenda (McKenzie) Bartz. Joyce meant the world to Dick, and he was honored to take such great care of her at home, especially in the last year.

Dick worked as a mechanic at Ted’s and then at C&H DX with his partner Randy Caster. He began working on the line at White Farm moving his way to maintenance until its closing and retired from Cambrex in Charles City after working there for several years.

Dick enjoyed racing in his early years and this transitioned into watching any type of racing or tractor pull he could find. Family was so important to Dick, and he supported all of his grandchildren’s events whenever possible (even planning his fishing trips to the Mississippi River around these events). Dick was a member of the Comet Bowl Coffee Bunch and played many games of Euchre with them (he also enjoyed other card games). He liked hunting, watching birds at the birdfeeder, hunting for mushrooms and asparagus, driving around to look for deer and keep tabs on the farmers, vegetable gardening and tying his own fishing lures.

Dick was loved by so many and he will be greatly missed.

Living family members include his wife of 45 years, Joyce; four sons: Adam (Melissa) Heitz of Charles City, Ben (Janel) Heitz of San Diego, California, Cole Heitz of Charles City and Drew (Jennifer) Heitz of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren: Tanner Heitz (Mackenzie LaCoste), Trever Heitz, Tyler Heitz, Addison Heitz and Katherine Heitz; siblings: Kenneth Heitz, Eugene (Ina) Heitz, Alan Heitz and Susan Wenthe; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
