Tornado kills at least 6 Iowans, injures many

DES MOINES – A tornado ripped through Iowa Saturday, killing a least 6 Iowans and injuring many more.

The tornado hit the small Central Iowa town of Winterset, causing major damage. Multiple vortices were recorded. Initial interrogation of photos and videos from around Winterset suggests at least EF-3 damage, the National Weather Service said. Survey teams will be out Sunday to thoroughly investigate the damage and further assess a potential rating.  Reportedly, 6 people died, including 2 children, and many other people were hurt.

Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg will tour storm damage in Winterset today at noon, and then hold a press conference at the Winterset Fire Department at 2:00 p.m. Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Madison County in response to the tornadoes, thunderstorms, and damaging winds. Additional counties may be added to the proclamation.
