College Wrestling: No. 5 Iowa State cruises to 31-9 win over West Virginia

AMES – No. 5 Iowa State (12-1, 5-0 Big 12) took care of business in wrestling action Friday night in Hilton Coliseum, defeating West Virginia (5-6, 0-4 Big 12), 31-9.

The Cyclones dropped the first two matches but cruised with wins in the final eight bouts to remain undefeated in league play. It was 10th-straight dual victory, the second-longest string in the nation.

ISU had 30 takedowns to West Virginia’s four.

Marcus Coleman got the Cyclones on board with a quick pin at 184 pounds over Anthony Carman. Coleman used a cradle to end the match at the 1:14 mark.

Yonger Bastida was a takedown machine in the 197-bout. Bastida used 10 takedowns and a two-point nearfall en route a technical fall victory over Jackson Moomau (23-8, 6:17).

Sam Schuyler came from behind to defeat Michael Wolfgram, 6-4 in sudden victory. Down 4-3 late in the third period, Schuyler scored a takedown with 1:05 left. He then ended the match with a takedown with 1:19 remaining in sudden victory.

Kysen Terukina upset No. 5 Killian Cardinale at 125 pounds (6-5), his second-straight win over a top-6 opponent. Terukina recorded the deciding takedown with 1:19 left in the match, but his escape with four seconds left in the first period was pivotal.

Ramazan Attasauov won a major decision over Garett Lautzenheiser, 10-2, at 133 pounds. Attasauov had three takedowns and a two-point nearfall at the end of the match.

Ian Parker had little trouble in an 8-2 decision over Caleb Rea at 149 pounds, and Jarrett Degen was a winner at 149 pounds, 8-3, over Jeffrey Boyd.

Top-ranked David Carr capped off the match with a 17-5 victory against Alex Hornfeck at 157 pounds, his 48th consecutive triumph. Carr had seven takedowns to increase his takedown differential on the season to 47-2.
