College Basketball: UNI defeats Southern Illinois, 79-64

CEDAR FALLS – After a tightly contested first half, UNI men’s basketball took over the second period as the Panthers defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 79-64 on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Center.

The Panthers improve to 11-9 and 7-3 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, while Illinois State falls to 10-12 with a 3-6 MVC mark.

UNI struggled early to find a shooting rhythm, but was able stay in the game with 12 first half free throws off of 12 Illinois State fouls and a strong rebounding presence on both offense and defense. With 12 rebounds on offense in the opening period, the Panthers used a 9-0 run to pulled even with the Redbirds in the final minute of the half, taking a two-point lead into the halftime break as Trae Berhow scored on a go-ahead layup at the buzzer, putting UNI up 30-28.

Green

The Panthers clicked into high gear in the second half with a dominating offensive performance, shooting 75% from the floor in the second stanza. Using a 16-3 run early in the half, UNI built a 23-point lead on 6 made three-point field goals and 9 team assists. Noah Carter and AJ Green combined for 29 of UNI’s 49 second half points, and shot a combined 13-for-13 from the charity stripe and the Panthers cruised to the 15-point victory.

Green finished the day with a game-high 24 points on 6 total three-point field goals. Carter notched 21 points with 3 assists and 2 steals, while Tytan Anderson posted an 8-point performance against the Redbirds. Off the bench, Bowen Born scored 7 points, as Trae Berhow led the Panthers with 6 rebounds, plus 6 points and 2 steals. Nate Heise also recorded 5 points and 5 rebounds in the win.

PANTHER NOTES
UNI has won the last 5 meetings against Illinois State dating back to the 2019-20 season. The Panthers are also 17-4 against the Redbirds at home under head coach Ben Jacobson.
Saturday’s game marks the second time this season two Panthers have each scored at least 20 points this season in a game. AJ Green scored 30 points on Dec. 1 at Bradley, while Noah Carter posted 20 points as UNI fell to the Braves.
Noah Carter has scored at least 15 points in 8 of UNI’s 10 MVC games this season. Carter notched a career-high 33 points on Jan. 19 at Valparaiso.
The Panthers are 8-2 when leading at halftime this season, and 11-3 when outrebounding the opponent.
With his 24-point performance, AJ Green passed Eric Coleman (2004-08) for 7th on UNI’s all-time scoring list with 1,539 career points.
Trae Berhow jumped to 31st on the program’s all-time scoring list, passing Matt Bohannon (2012-16).
Austin Phyfe is 36 points from passing his father Steve on UNI’s career scoring list. Steve Phyfe, who played at UNI from 1987-90 as a member of the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament team, scored 912 points for the Panthers.
Noah Carter moves up to 82nd on the program’s all-time scoring list after his 21-point game against Illinois State on Saturday. The sophomore forward has scored 683 career points in his 3rd season at UNI.

The Panthers return to action on Feb. 2 at home against Bradley. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at the McLeod Center. UNI will wear black warm-up shirts in support of the ERACISM Social Inclusion Movement.
