MASON CITY – Mason City police today offered some incredibly obvious advice to careless drivers: Scrape your frost-covered windshields.
The biting windchills have dealt those of us in North Iowa without garages an extra dose of hassle on these frozen mornings: Crystalized ice completely covering our windshields. Just as you are running out of time to get yourself to work or your kids to school, you have to make a choice; 1) pray your defroster delivers a miracle, 2) scrape off the seemingly impenetrable substance obscuring your vision, 3) or (stupidly and selfishly) just get in the car and take off and hope for the best, using The Force to guide you through your journey.
Bitter cold sucks, but it’s probably worse to be dead or in the ER. Yet, somehow, law enforcement are saying that folks are choosing the last option – and it is causing problems. According to Mason City police:
“Over the past two days we’ve had several calls where drivers are involved in crashes or reported as drunk drivers because of this…a frosty windshield. Take the time to scrape it so you can see before you head out. We understand it is cold out, but don’t let this be the cause of your crash.”
Would you rather have your funeral planned, wreck your car, mangle yourself or someone else, or simply take 5 minutes and be a responsible person and clear off your windshield before embarking on your trip to the closest drive-thru for a couple thousand calories to kick-start your day?

This cold is below normal and we have had much worse for much longer. Be responsible and scrape you windows you lazy P.O.S. Don’t endanger other people with your stupidity.
