College Wrestling: Two UNI Panthers medal at Matmen Open at 133 pounds

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – UNI wrestling’s Julian Farber avenged a first-round loss that set him up for a fourth-place finish, and Jack Wagner took seventh at the Matmen Open.

Three UNI wrestlers remained alive in the consolations after the first day of the 2021 Matmen Open. Ethan Basile had to drop out of this morning’s matches at 141 pounds, leaving two Panthers to compete in the 133-pound weight class.

Farber, a freshman from Bonaire, Georgia, opened the day with a win over Kurt Phipps of Bucknell, winning in a 5-1 decision. He then took on Carter Bailey of Lehigh, who kept Farber scoreless in their first meeting. Farber was bumped to the consolations after his first match of the tournament, losing 6-0 to Bailey.

However, Farber battled back to face Bailey again. This time, Farber controlled the match and earned an extra point for riding time to go on to win, 11-4. Farber faced Drew Mattin of Michigan in the bronze medal match, where Mattin earned a 10-0 major decision. Farber took fourth.

Also at 133 pounds, Wagner opened the second day with a forfeit from No. 12 Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers. A 4-0 loss to Joey Olivieri (Rutgers) sent Wagner to the seventh-place match, where he faced Kurt Phipps of Bucknell.

Wagner scored off an escape and took the lead with two takedowns after the first period, going up 5-3. Phipps deferred position choice in the second period, and Wagner chose neutral. With no scoring in the second period, Wagner continued to lead going into the third period. Phipps chose bottom for the third period, and Wagner allowed Phipps to escape. Wagner grabbed a takedown and earned a riding point to go on to win 8-4 for seventh place.

The Matmen Open replaced the annual Midlands Championships, which originally was planned in the same arena on the same dates. UNI wrestling was scheduled to compete at the Hawkeye Open Jan. 2. The event has since been canceled.

UP NEXT

UNI will open with Wyoming at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 and end with a dual against SDSU at 2 p.m. Jan. 9. SDSU also will face Wyoming. All three matches will be broadcast on FloWrestling, and live scoring will available on Trackwrestling.
