Women’s College Basketball: Hot shooting pushes No. 12 Iowa State past Prairie View A&M, 108-39

AMES – No. 12 Iowa State (11-1, 0-0 Big 12) closed out the calendar year with a 108-39 win over Prairie View A&M (2-8, 0-0 SWAC) Sunday behind 19 three-pointers, which tied a school record and broke the record for the most inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones overwhelmed the visitors from the start, and led by as many as 69, as ISU improved to 7-0 at home this season.

The Cyclones extended their winning streak to four games as they reached the century mark for the first time since 2019 (vs. Texas Tech). ISU shot 51 precent, including 19-of-39 (49%) from beyond the arc, and held the Panthers to 21 percent from the field. Iowa State’s 19 triples is also tied for the second-most in a game in Big 12 history, and tied for third-most in the country in a game this season.

Emily Ryan turned in the third double-double of her career with 12 points and a career-best 15 assists to go along with five rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Ryan’s 15 assists tied for the second-most in school history and tied for the second-most in the country this season. Ashley Joens posted her sixth double-double of the year with a 19-point, 10-rebound effort.

In total, five Cyclones finished in double figures, led by a season-high 26 from Lexi Donarski. Aubrey Joens contributed 18 points and eight rebounds while Nyamer Diew added 10 points. Morgan Kane grabbed 10 boards, one shy of tying a career high, and tallied eight points.

How It Happened
The Cyclones scored on six of their first seven possessions as they stepped in front quickly, 14-2, to prompt an early Panther timeout just over three minutes into the game. Iowa State hit six triples and used a 20-2 run over 7:06 of game time to lead PVAMU 29-4 at the end of the first quarter. Emily Ryan led ISU with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting in the opening quarter.

Iowa State sank a three-pointer on its first three trips down the floor in the second quarter – one each from Lexi Donarski, Aubrey Joens and Emily Ryan – as it bolstered its lead to 48-11 at the media timeout. The Cyclones held PVAMU scoreless over the final 5:33 to lead 65-11 at the halfway point.

The Panthers showed signs of life after they connected on their first two attempts from deep in the third quarter. Aubrey Joens’ sixth trey of the contest quickly stifled the 6-0 PVAMU run. Back-to-back triples from Donarski extended ISU’s advantage to 78-17 and forced a Panther timeout with 5:55 left in the period. An and-one opportunity for Ashley Joens with 25 seconds left gave Iowa State a 89-23 lead at the end of the quarter.

Iowa State kept its foot on the gas in the final stanza and pushed past the 100-point mark on a pair of Diew free throws with 3:32 to play. Maddie Frederick connected on the Cyclones’ 19th triple of the game, tying the single-game school record, with 2:35 remaining.
