DICKINSON COUNTY – The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle accident that that claimed the life of a mother and baby.
Mariah Nelson, age 29 of Jackson, Minnesota was driving a 2008 Hyundai east bound on 120 street at 11:28AM on Saturday, November 13, 2021. Nelson went through the stop sign and collided with a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by 63-year-old Allen Weinzetl of Jackson, Minnesota, south bound on US Highway 71. Both vehicles rolled and came to rest southeast of the intersection.
Mariah Nelson and her son Symere Williams, age 1, were killed in the accident. Nelson’s daughters, Armani Scottage 5, and Zariah Scott, age 6, were transported to a hospital with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Allen Weinzetl was transported to a hospital with non-incapacitating injuries while his passenger Teresa Chonko, age 58, was transported to a hospital with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls.
The accident remains under investigation by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
