UNI men’s basketball opens 2022 with loss to Nicholls State, 62-58

CEDAR FALLS – UNI men’s basketball opened with a 62-58 loss to Nicholls State.

The Panthers (0-1 / 0-0 MVC) were off to a strong start in the first half, but the Colonels were able to tie it up at half. Nicholls went up by 11 points in the second half to eventually seal the win.

Austin Phyfe led the Panthers in scoring with 20 points, nine of them coming from free throws. He just missed his career high of 22 points. Tywhon Pickford threw in 13 of his own points.

Other notes:

Trae Berhow’s seven points moves him up to No. 49 on the all-time leading scorers list at UNI, surpassing current staff member and former player Marc Sonnen.
UNI was 25-38 on free throws, 65.8%.
The Panther bench accounted for 21 of UNI’s points.
UNI scored on 6 of the 10 Nicholls State turnovers.

UP NEXT
UNI is just beginning its three-game home stretch. The Panthers will be back in McLeod to face Vermont University at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 and wrap up the week with the University of Dubuque at 5 p.m. Nov. 14.

Yes it was the warm up game for Nicholls State before their real season starts.
UNI should have stuck with playing Wartburg!

Or is that Nicholls or Nickels ??

When did Nichols become a State ? Also, I never knew they were the leading state in the production of Nichols !!
