Todd Blodgett of Clear Lake Iowa is an accomplished writer and political strategist. He has been the most-popular writer in the history of the Globe Gazette, been published in numerous news publications, and has written a book, “Republican Crackhead.”

Mason City’s athletic teams should keep the name, “Mohawks’, despite objections from the tribe.  Most Leftists, after all, disregard the opponents of removing statues and monuments honoring Confederates. But the US defeated the Confederacy and the Indians, including Mohawks.  Gratitude, not truculence, should accompany being honored in such manner.  Since America’s founding, BILLIONS of dollars have been spent, by individuals and corporations, for names on buildings, sports teams, foundations, vessels, stadiums, churches and campuses.  Effectively, River City pays tribute to this tribe.  In Iowa, 10 athletic teams are named the Indians; seven are called the Warriors; Two are the Braves; two are the Reds; and two – including Mason City’s – are Mohawks.  Other Iowa teams include the Savages, Chiefs, Chickasaws and Wahawks.  While growing up in the 1960s and ’70s, I regularly viewed the original oil paintings and signed, numbered prints of celebrated Mohawk tribe members, on the walls of the old Euchre & Cycle club, which was located on the top floor of the Hanford hotel.  Longtime club members told me that the Mohawks were respected, due to their fearless nature and renowned bellicosity.

Was that why Mason City named its teams for this tribe, circa 1925?  The ‘Legends of America’ website states, “Because of their warlike nature, the Mohawk were feared, due to their brutal attacks and the merciless way they treated their captives.  Along with the other tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, they waged warfare on all of their neighboring tribes, until they were all conquered”, according to the respected historian Kathy Weiser, a noted expert on Native American tribes, culture and history.  During the American Revolution, most Mohawks sided with the British.  Most Mohawks then fought (as British allies) against the US in the War of 1812.  They were also cannibals; in the Algonquin tribe’s language – Narragansett – ‘Mohawk’, translated, means “flesh eater”.  Incidentally, ‘Mohawk’ didn’t ORIGINATE as a Native American term; the Spaniards coined it before it was adapted into English.  Then, it was later appropriated by Indian tribes.  Shouldn’t such facts render the tribe’s claims baseless, and shouldn’t relevant history matter to the supporters of this putrid, PC nonsense?

Numerous unwise decisions were made by Indian tribes, which cost them land, time and lives.  By urging discontinuation of ‘Mohawk’, today’s Mohawks prove they’re no wiser than their vanquished, traitorous ancestors.  The late actor Jay Silverheels, who played ‘Tonto’ – The Lone Ranger’s beloved sidekick – was a Mohawk.  In that classic radio and TV series, Tonto always addressed The Lone Ranger as ‘Kemo Sabe’ – which, according to its producers, meant, “trusty scout”.  The EyeWitnessToHistory.com website features excerpts from ‘Living among the Mohawks’, which was written by Dutch minister Johannnes Megapolensis in 1648.  He wrote, “The [Mohawks] are very cruel to their enemies …  they first bite off the nails of the fingers of their captives, and cut off some joints, and sometimes, even whole fingers … finally, they roast their prisoners dead before a slow fire for some days, and then eat them up.”  So, if the British had defeated the Continental Army, would a savagely butchered General George Washington have been cooked – along with squash, hominy, raccoons and Thomas Jefferson?

Of Mohawk brutality, Rev. Megapolensis added, “Their money consists of certain little bones … shells, and cockles, which are found on the sea-beach.  A hole is drilled through the middle of the little bones, and these they string upon thread.  They value these little bones as highly as Christians do gold, silver and pearls; but they do not like our money, and esteem it no better than iron.”  Clearly, the predilection toward their poverty began early.  Today’s Mohawks don’t esteem the time they’re squandering, by demanding Mason City schools cease with “Mohawks”.  To avert an angry, ‘Cowboys-and-Indians’ style uprising, the city’s School Board should summarily ignore these defeated, whiny, ungrateful losers.

How about the Mason City Mallards? I think the campus was a duck pond in the early days. Before it was drained.

The mohawks, like all indian tribes, are composed of drunks, drug addicts, whores, and bastards who have no idea of who their fathers are. Sending them some more smallpox infected blankets might just be a good idea.

I see the regular low intelligence supporters of Blodgett have to add their racist bs to the conversation.

The name Mohawk comes from a name their enemies called them, meaning “man-eaters.” The term man-eaters does not really mean that they ate people. It means that they were fierce warriors. The Mohawk’s name for themselves means “people of the flint.”

No one gives a shit about injuns, barely anyone even knows they existed at all anymore and with the removal of all these ‘racist’ sports team names it’s just another reference to them that is now being deleted along with the rest of their “culture”. In 50 years after the last injun drinks himself to death on a rez there won’t be a single trace of them left on this country.

Does anybody know, when is the next school board meeting. We will plan to go, make our voice’s heard.

When they got rid of Micich, that witch, we thought this PC crap was done. What happened?

These board people, they work for us, they need to be put in their place. Or, there’s the door that we can toss them out of.

I am 1/8 Indian (Cherokee) originally from Osage, and I have lived in MC for almost 40 years, and I am proud our teams bear an Indian name. My stepmom grew up in Oskaloosa, the team there is called the Indians, what’s the problem?

We have friends that has Indian blood (Apache, Blackfoot tribes) and none of them are offended at the team’s being called the Mohawks.

Who are these people that got on our school board?

Don’t they have better things to do then waste time and money on this BS?

I say, let’s make them stop. There are ways.

Here’s an idea, could always keep the”M”
Mason City Morans. It’s an idea that our community follows from the terrible progressive ideas in grade school, to dumb spending decisions our school board makes, all the way up to the selfish ideology of the chamber of commerce and the half a$$ leadership we get from our city council. The Morans could be an accurate mascot for past and future generations.

We are sick and tired of these indians trying to push us around. Like the article says, the Mohawks tribe, they took and used this word, its not theirs, its ours.

These indians, they act like they won, but we did.

Them and those board members can stuff it where the sun don’t shine.

There is alot of ways to make these busy body board members feel some heat, something does need to happen.

How many of them even ever were Mohawks, or went to school here. Its past time to make them back off, one way or another.

I would go with the Monarchs.

This time, Mr. Blodgett is right. The School Board has opened up a can of worms with this non-issue, and unwisely created a controversy which could have, and still can be, avoided.

I have not been on the same side of anything, ever before, as Blodgett, but it would certainly behoove the School Board directors to pay heed to the position taken in this column, and act accordingly.

It is rare for me to agree with Mr. Blodgett’s views, but on this issue, he happens to be correct. The school board members can table this one, to be debated down the road.

Left unsaid in Blodgett’s piece is what I infer to be his political threat to any school board members who may vote to cease and desist with the name, Mohawks.

If I were a holder of political office in this county, I would not want a vicious, experienced political dirty trickster like Blodgett targeting my future campaigns.

This guy likes to fight, and he’s very good at it.

Maybe the name change should be to the “indigenous drunks”. It’s a more accurate description of today’s natives. And it also falls in line with mason city culture.

If them so call woke school board members know what’s good for them, they will back off.

Most people don’t want Mohawks go away, maybe time to make them board members go away, who would miss them.

Not me, no sir.

Hooray for this. With all the problems we have here in Mason, what kinda weirdo’s want to waste time to get rid of our Mohawks.

Fool’s, that is who, yes. And, if them people do not like Mohawks being our name then they need to leave out of here.

Best column we seen in along time, already screen shot it, text it to the brother in law out to Flagstaff, in Ariz. Their from Mason and they love it to, keep up this good work Mr Blodgett.

So glad NIT prints Todd’s words, if it would of been up to the Globb great things like this one would never see the light of the day.

This is one super article, thanks be to God somebody puts out the truth. Love how Todd puts in the true history and real facts, yes they should matter.

Keep the Mohawks name for now and forever.

Great article! God I hate this woke bullshit!

Beautiful column Mr B, we love how you always tell it like it is. Thank you for doing this, it is time for the truth to show.
