OBIT: Viola A. West

Viola A. West the daughter of Sylvester and Alvina (Iverson) Berge was born August 29, 1929, at her home near Wallingford, Iowa. She died on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 92.

Viola attended High Lake Country School, Estherville School and Augustana Academy. She then went to college at Waldorf, Augustana and Morningside College.

In 1956, she was united in marriage to Virgil West at Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Gruver. Viola was a lifelong resident of Emmet County. She was a teacher and librarian at Lincoln Central School in Gruver. Viola and Virgil enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. Viola served on Many Voices Choir, Emmet County Country Chords and Emmet County Conservation Board. For hobbies, she enjoyed, sewing, painting, rosemaling, gardening and singing.

Viola was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Gruver. She was very active in her church including, Church Council Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, Church Choir, Director of Junior Choir, President of Ladies Organization, and Church Quilting.

Left to cherish Viola’s memory are her husband, Virgil; her children, Michelle West; Steven (Sherry) West; Michael (Leanne) West; her six grandchildren that she enjoyed spending time with Heather (Jay) Heims; Amy (Chase) Crosby; Autumn West-Riley; Brian (Kayla Brandt) West; Rachel (Matthew) Tomlinson and Eric (Madison) West; four great grandchildren, Weston and Erica Heims, Payton Seiff and Isiah Tomlinson. She is also survived by her sister, Janice (Allan) Vik.

She has been preceded in death by her parents.

Viola’s family suggests memorials to Ingham Lake Bible Camp.
