Ames apartment houses evacuated when “suitcase and a case connected by wires” found in nearby grass

AMES – A scary-looking item was found in the grass near apartment houses in Ames, leading to evacuations and a police and bomb squad response.

Iowa State University Police received a report of a suspicious item near buildings 33 and 34 at Frederiksen Court Apartments around 9:20 AM on Monday, June 28. Officers responded and located the items – a suitcase and a case connected by wires – in the grass near the roadway by building 34 on Frederiksen Court. They determined further investigation was necessary and contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office for assistance. As a precaution, buildings 31, 33 and 34 were evacuated while the State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated. The buildings are currently unoccupied for the summer, but cleaning crews and other staff were working in the area. Ames Fire Department and Mary Greeley Medical Center paramedics provided support on scene while the investigation took place.

The State Fire Marshall’s Office examined the suitcase and determined there was no threat. The items were secured by ISU Police and the scene was cleared at 12:28 PM.
