OBIT: Richard “Dick” Lappin

Richard (Dick) Lappin, age 92, of Algona, died on June 21, 2021. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona. Inurnment will be held in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona. Richard Frederick Van Horsen was born on June 1, 1929 to Daniel and Jeanetta (Druger) Van Horsen in Worthington, Minnesota. In 1940 he went to live at the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children in Owatonna, Minnesota. In 1943 he was adopted by William and Edna (Kerns) Lappin of Imogene, Minnesota and his middle name was changed to Bernard.

In November 1948, he joined the Navy and served until February 1950 at Norfolk, Virginia. In 1948, he married Louise Booth and the couple settled in Chincoteague, Virginia. To this union four children were born: Richard, Robert “Eddie”, Susan, and Carol. The couple later divorced. Richard returned to the Midwest, where he met his future wife, Janice Hudson, of Armstrong, Iowa. The couple lived in Minnesota until 1971, when they moved to Algona, Iowa. They were married on July 20, 1983 in Miami, Oklahoma. To this union four children were born: Lori, Lisa, Larry, and Lonny.

Richard was mechanically gifted and spent his working years as a maintenance worker, truck driver, and diesel mechanic before retiring in 1992. After his retirement he enjoyed tinkering in his garage and worked part-time at the McGregor & Dodge car dealership in Algona.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Daniel “Bud” Van Horsen, Fern Watts, Frank Van Horsen, Jeanetta Sorbe, Clayton Van Horsen, Eddie Bleuer, Paul Sukau, and Carol Platt, daughter Susie Wilborn, and son-in-law Jason Hanchett.
He is survived by his wife Janice of Algona, children Richard (Diane) Lappin, Eddie (Cheryl) Lappin, Carol Lappin, Lori Hanchett, Lisa (Rick) Thompson, Larry (Carol Laubenthal) Lappin, and Lonny (Jennifer) Lappin, 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and sister JoAnn (John) Hilgendorf of Welcome, Minnesota.
