OBIT: Thomas Newman

Thomas Newman, 78 of Clear Lake, died Friday, May 28, 2021, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Ave. N., Clear Lake.

Tom was born November 27, 1942, the son of Losen Edward and Alberta Mae (Laws) Newman in Knoxville, IA. He married Kathy Rowe on September 1, 1973, in Kanawha, IA, and to that union a daughter was born.

As a child, Tom grew up in many communities, eventually settling in Clear Lake after high school. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. For most of Tom’s career, he was a heavy equipment operator for different road construction companies including, Fred Carlson Co. Inc. and Martin Marietta.

Tom was an avid Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan who also loved classic cars and watching NASCAR. He enjoyed fishing throughout North Iowa and taking trips to Canada, going for car rides with friends, and trying his luck at daily scratch-off tickets. Most of all he cherished time spent with his dogs, family and attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Tom is survived by his wife, Kathy Newman of Clear Lake; daughter, Shannon (Tony) Heflin of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Adam, Allison and Alexa Heflin; siblings, Marj Grell of Loveland, CO, Donna Smith of Waukee, Ed (Tracy) Newman of Humboldt and Rich Nonweiler of Clear Lake; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Joshua and Jaime and step-mother, DeLoris Newman.
