North Iowa man severely hurt in collision near Thornton

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – A North Iowa man was severely hurt in a collision near Thornton Tuesday evening.

On May 18th, 2021 at 9:47 PM, Cerro Gordo county deputies responded to the 5000 block of Balsam Avenue north of Meservey, Iowa for a traffic collision with injuries. A 2018 Ford Edge being driven by Zelene Schilling, age 64, of Meservey was traveling southbound when she collided with a disabled 1990 Ford F-250 that was stopped in the roadway, also facing southbound, with no lights on. German Cabrera, 38, of Meservey was entering the driver’s seat of the the Ford F-250 when the collision occurred.

Cabrera was severely injured as a result of the collision and was transported to MercyOne North Iowa by the Mason City Fire Department. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the collision.

The Iowa State Patrol, Hancock County Sheriffs Office, Mason City Fire Department, and Meservey and Thornton First Responders all assisted on scene.
