Northern Iowa man gets 50 years in prison for murder after body found in lake

PALO ALTO COUNTY, IOWA – A deceased person was found in a rural Northern Iowa lake in last summer, and now a Northern Iowa man has been sent to prison for murder.

On March 16, 2021, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office transported Allan M Schwidder, age 30 of Emmetsburg, to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale, Ia. Schwidder received an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed fifty (50) years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

On July 22, 2020 at 1:16 PM, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a passerby of a possible body in Virgin Lake, south of Ruthven, Iowa. Upon arriving at the east boat ramp in the 3700 block of 353 Ave, one body was observed 25 feet from shore. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations was called and the body was removed from the lake and transported to the Iowa Medical Examiners Office in Ankeny, Iowa.

The body was identified as 27-year-old Rollin J. Bontrager from Washington, Iowa.

On July 31, 2020, search warrants were executed at two residences in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Three vehicles were also searched. Numerous items were seized and analyzed.

Agencies that assisted in this investigation were the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Palo Alto County Coroner, Palo Alto County Conservation, Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office, the Emmet County and Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Emmetsburg and Spencer Police Department’s, and the Iowa DCI Crime Scene Unit.

On August 14, 2020 at 8:40 PM, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation arrested Allan Michael Dean Schwidder, 29 of Emmetsburg, on a valid Palo Alto County arrest warrant for 1st Degree Murder, a Class “A” Felony. Schwidder was arrested at 102 A Avenue East in Lake Park, Iowa. Schwidder was transported to the Palo Alto County Jail without incident.l to await his initial appearance before a judge.

Agencies assisting with the arrest were the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Park Police Department.
