WATERLOO – The No. 15 NIACC volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 18 Hawkeye CC in an ICCAC match Tuesday night.
Hawkeye CC (2-0 overall, 2-0 in ICCAC) won 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 16-25, 17-15.
It is the third straight match between NIACC and Hawkeye CC that went five games. NIACC nipped Hawkeye CC 3-2 in the 2019 season and edged the Redtails 3-2 in the 2018 regional tournament.
In the deciding fifth game, the score was tied at 10-10, 11-11, 14-14 and 15-15 before Hawkeye CC claimed the conference match 17-15.
NIACC sophomore Becca Steffen, who is from Vinton, recorded 45 assists to push her career total to 1,009 as she became the 12th player in school history with 1,000 career assists. Steffen now ranks 11th on the school’s career assist list with 1,009.
NIACC (1-1 overall, 1-1 in ICCAC) returns to action Thursday at home against No. 17 Northeast CC (1-0, 1-0). Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
Northeast CC opened its season with a 3-0 win over Iowa Lakes on Tuesday.
