Women’s College Basketball: Panthers top Indiana State 88-53 to earn series sweep

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UNI women’s basketball topped Indiana State 88-53 Saturday afternoon to earn a series sweep.

The Sycamores were the first to find the hoop but that didn’t stop the Panthers from a 20-10 scoring run to gain control early in the game. Nicole Kroeger scored seven early points, a three-pointer and two swift layups that helped UNI end the quarter with a 25-16 lead.

Indiana State cut the Panther lead to six points, 29-22, with 6:29 left in the second quarter, but that is as close as the Sycamores would come for remainder of the game.

Emerson Green scored seven of her nine points in the second quarter which allowed UNI to create a 51-33 lead going into halftime.

The Panther defense allowed just six points for the Sycamores in the third. Adrian Folks led Indiana State for the second night in a row with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Sycamores shot 18.2% from behind the arc while the Panthers doubled Indiana State’s shot percentage and went 38.5% from the three-point line.

UNI shot 55.6% from the field for the game. Bre Gunnels held the game-high with 13 points and Megan Maahs, Nicole Kroeger and Karli Rucker also scored in double-figures.

With the series sweep, the Panthers are now 8-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Panthers travel to Drake on Wednesday, Jan. 27 to play the Drake Women’s basketball team at 6 p.m.

Drake is third in the conference with a record of 5-2 recording losses from Bradley and Missouri State.

GAME NOTES:

– Grace Boffeli recorded four points and two rebounds.
– The Panthers doubled the Sycamores’ three-point shooting percentage and recorded 38.5% from behind the arc.
– Megan Maahs recorded 12 rebounds in the series. She only needs three more rebounds to claim the No. 2 spot on the All-Time Rebounding list.
– Four Panthers scored in double-figures.
– Cailyn Morgan went 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the three-point line.
