College Track & Field: Iowa State’s Gomez runs to NCAA-leading mark in 800m at Cyclone Invite

AMES – Iowa State once again showed it will be a force in the indoor campaign ahead with many outstanding performances at the Cyclone Invite Saturday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The highlight of a day which featured 11 ISU wins was a national-leading effort by an ISU debutant, and another outstanding performance by ISU’s Female Athlete of the Year.

With a trio of 2020 NCAA Indoor qualifiers having exhausted their indoor eligibility, ISU was seeking who its next mid-distance star would be. It came from a guy in his Cyclone debut in sophomore Jason Gomez. A transfer from Division II Notre Dame de Namur, Gomez was in third behind unattached Cyclone stars Festus Lagat and Roshon Roomes. However, Gomez showed his massive potential with a huge move on the outside with 150m to go, taking the long way around to get past the multi-time All-Americans and bring home the win in 1:47.02, his PR by over three seconds, No. 2 in ISU history and the NCAA Division I leader at the time of publication.

In the women’s 3,000m run, it was ISU’s seven-time Big 12 champion across all disciplines and defending Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year Cailie Logue had a big debut to her indoor season en route to winning the 3K in 9:19.45, which at the time of publication ranks No. 4 in the country this season. Iowa State took the top five spots in the women’s 3,000m, with Brenna Cohoon (9:37.91), Dana Feyen (9:39.70) and Grace Dickel (9:42.88) all posting PRs in the process.

A pair of Cyclone women finished Saturday with two wins. Katarina Vlahovic took wins in the 60m hurdles and 200m dash. Vlahovic led an ISU 1-2-3 in the hurdles, taking first in 8.43, followed by Tatiana Aholou (8.52) and Kendra Leger (8.55). Vlahovic later got the win in the 200-meter dash in 24.95. Keiara Williams swept the women’s throw events, taking the weight throw first in 57-10 1/4 (17.63m) and then posting a PR in the shot put of 50-4 1/2 (15.35m).

Other ISU winners on the day included Gage Clay (men’s 200m, 22.14), Zakiyah Amos (women’s 400m, 56.46), Kevin Sakson (men’s shot put, 56-1 1/4 (17.10m)) and the men’s 4x400m relay team of Joven Nelson, Lomong, Tanner Anderson and Charlie Johnson (3:17.96).
