WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republicans in the U.S. House refused to support the CASH Act this morning brought by Democrats which would issue $2,000 stimulus checks to eligible Americans, and the leading Democrat in the chamber is furious.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on House Republicans blocking Democrats’ Unanimous Consent request to increase economic impact payments to $2,000, as the President called for:
“Today, on Christmas Eve morning, House Republicans cruelly deprived the American people of the $2,000 that the President agreed to support. If the President is serious about the $2,000 direct payments, he must call on House Republicans to end their obstruction.
“House and Senate Democrats have repeatedly fought for bigger checks for the American people, which House and Senate Republicans have repeatedly rejected – first, during our negotiations when they said that they would not go above $600 and now, with this act of callousness on the Floor.
“On Monday, I will bring the House back to session where we will hold a recorded vote on our stand-alone bill to increase economic impact payments to $2,000. To vote against this bill is to deny the financial hardship that families face and to deny them the relief they need.
“Hopefully by then the President will have already signed the bipartisan and bicameral legislation to keep government open and to deliver coronavirus relief.”
President Donald Trump, serving out the rest of his final term in office, was aware of negations underway for months for a new stimulus, blew up a bill arriving at his desk this week that offered Americans a $600 stimulus check and bloated handouts to pork projects and foreign countries. He called for $2,000 checks to Americans. He reportedly had little or nothing to do with negotiations over these last months since the last stimulus that passed in the Spring. He is now in Holiday in Florida.
California Rep. Kevin McCarthy reportedly balked at the CASH Act, which needed unanimous consent from Republicans to pass.
This morning, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after House Republicans blocked approval of the CASH Act, legislation the Chairman introduced to increase the amount of money struggling Americans receive in a second round of direct payments to $2,000:
“If not for congressional Republicans, $2,000 checks would be heading to Americans in need. Instead, on this Christmas Eve morning, Minority Leader McCarthy directly undermined President Trump and led the charge to block this crucial relief from reaching millions of families. This heartless obstruction comes at a time when folks across the country are wondering how they’ll put food on the table and cover next month’s rent payment. Democrats will continue to fight to provide Americans with the substantial support they require to make ends meet during the ongoing COVID crisis.”
