Iowa prison inmate and convicted sex offender serving quarter-century sentence dies from Covid-19

IOWA CITY – An Iowa sex offender who o was sent to prison for a quarter-century has died in prison, officials say.

Jonathan William Strain was pronounced dead, likely due to complications related to COVID-19 and other preexisting medical conditions at 4:47 a.m. this morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He had been transported there recently from the Anamosa State Penitentiary due to his declining health. Strain was 59 years old at the time of his death.

Strain had been serving a 25-year sentence for the crime of Sex Abuse 2nd Degree (709.3) from O’Brien County. His sentence began on November 3, 2010.
