AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team was tabbed 14th in the Lindy’s Sports Preseason Top 25, while junior guard Ashley Joens was named a second-team All-American.
The Cyclones have begun to generate preseason buzz after ending the 2019-20 campaign on a high note with an upset of No. 2 Baylor on Senior Day. The Cyclones ended Baylor 58-game Big 12 regular season win streak, giving Iowa State one of its biggest wins in school history. The Cyclones also return their top four scorers with Joens (20.5), Kristin Scott (14.2), Rae Johnson (8.9) and Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw (8.6).
Joens ended her sophomore season averaging 20.5 points and 10.9 rebounds and was the only player in the nation to average 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds on the year. She scored a game-high 15 points against No. 2 Baylor and her final bucket of the game put her over 1,000 points in her career, as she became the only Iowa State sophomore to do so. Her stellar season earned her AP honorable mention All-America honors and she was a top-5 finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award.
