AMES – Freshman John Doherty shot a 39-41 – 80 to lead the NIACC men’s golf team Monday at the DMACC Invitational at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
NIACC placed 10th in the team standings with a 330. Iowa Western was the men’s team champion with a 286 and Indian Hills was second with a 287.
“It was an ugly day for the men (Monday),” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “We took a big step backwards.
“Yes, it was windy but everyone plays on the same course in the same conditions. We just weren’t mentally in it for 18 holes.”
Also for the Trojans, JJ Wickman shot 42-41 – 83, Jack Barragy shot 38-45 – 83, Beau Thompson shot 39-45 – 84, Kai Nelles shot 47-41 – 88, Jason Hesner shot 40-46 – 86 and Hunter Heintz shot 44-47 – 91.
“The grind of the fall season took a toll on us (Monday),” Frenz said. “We’ll take a couple of days off, refresh our minds and bodies and get ready for the Quad Cup on Sunday at Coldwater in Ames.”
