Mason City’s ‘River City Renaissance Project – Mason City Arena’ Named the People’s All-Star Community Award Recipient by the Iowa League of Cities

DES MOINES – The Iowa League of Cities named Mason City’s ‘River City Renaissance Project – Mason City Arena’ as the People’s All-Star Award winner for 2020. This project was entered into a bracket-style tournament for public “Liking” (voting) along with other communities’ projects. The entry was submitted and posted on the League’s Facebook page. The photos/captions with the most Likes moved to the next round. Mason City’s project was named the winner of the People’s All-Star tournament announced earlier today in conjunction with the League’s Annual Conference & Exhibit.

“This award is a real tribute to the strong community support for the River City Renaissance development and the positive impact it is having on our downtown,” said City Administrator Aaron Burnett. “The new Mason City Arena is an innovative project that is a testament to the progressive steps Mason City is taking and the momentum that is driving the realization of the larger Vision North Iowa plan.”

The All-Star Community Awards program seeks to acknowledge and encourage excellence in local government and provides an opportunity for officials and staff of member cities to receive recognition for their superior and innovative efforts. In addition, the program provides a means for sharing Iowa’s best public service ideas and demonstrates that those involved with local government are progressive, caring and committed to their communities.

Programs or projects eligible for an All-Star Community Award include, but aren’t limited to, city service improvements, quality of life enrichment and local government partnerships. Potential entries could include diversity appreciation, urban renewal, neighborhood or business development, historic preservation, sharing of services or facilities, or improving the quality, quantity or efficiency of city services.

Awards are nice but as I was once told, it takes money to buy whiskey.

Forgot the rest: “As one of the best public screw jobs to date.”

Somethings better than nothing. Moving forward for the greater good is what needs to be done. Many malls are opting to fill vacancies with doctor and dentist offices. Kind of like healthcare on the cheap for people living from paycheck to paycheck. Run by flunkies hustling to make a fat payday. Typical mismanagement of resources designed to improve life. Which is the American standard now due to greed. Healthcare made affordable should be a priority. Hospitals should be run like grocery stores. Open to all!
