Edwin Mark Duroe, the son of W.E. and Mary (Stemm) Duroe, was born on June 9, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in Des Moines, Iowa where he attended Dowling High School and Drake University. Ed proudly served stateside during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corp.

Ed was joined in marriage to Alice Elaine Kraft on June 5, 1954 at St. John Catholic Church in Des Moines. They raised five wonderful sons. A businessman and auto dealer his entire life, the couple moved to Charles City the summer of 1964. Ed started Duroe’s Inc. on January 1, 1966 (selling Pontiac and Buicks). Ed expanded the business after the tornado of 1968 until selling it in 1985 when Alice’s health began to decline. He and Alice wintered in Punta Gorda, Florida for over 20 years enjoying warmer winters with friends and family.

Ed was a committed member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Charles City business community his entire life. He volunteered his time and energy whenever asked. Ed was a Charles City Chamber of Commerce Ambassador for over 30 years and also served on several local boards.

Ed’s real passion, besides his family, was the outdoors. He was an avid bird hunter, gardener and fisherman. Fall would find him following his shorthairs, organizing hunts and keeping the boys out of mom’s hair. Spring was a time to plant and mushroom hunt (leaving his and Fred Newton’s favorite mushroom spots a secret to this day).

Ed will be dearly missed by family, friends and his community.

Living family members include his four sons: Scott (Shelley) Duroe of Olathe, Kansas, Steve (Ronnie) Duroe of Tampa, Florida, Brian “B.J.”(Melissa) Duroe of Tiffin and David (Susan) Duroe of Adel; 14 grandchildren: Marc Duroe, Brian Evans, Ashley (Duroe) Olson, Alexandra Duroe, Michael Duroe, Katie Duroe, Jared Duroe, Brett Duroe, Seth Duroe, Chris Mayland, Jason Duroe, Adyson Duroe, Benson Duroe and Olivia Kline; two great-grandchildren: Kadin Olson and Kinzie Olson; two sisters: Doran Iosbaker and Mary Fran (Otis) Irwin; sister-in-law, Joan Duroe; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, W.E. and Mary Duroe; wife of 64 years, Alice on February 5, 2019; son, Michael Duroe; granddaughter, Haley Duroe; and brother, Bill Duroe.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Messiah Food Pantry in Charles City or Floyd County Conservation.
