Northern Iowa man faces charges after allegedly biting, choking woman

ESTHERVILLE, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man is facing charges after allegedly biting and choking a woman before fleeing police to hide in a shed.

On June 10, 2020, officers with the Estherville, Iowa police department were dispatched to 533 South 8th Street for an assault in progress. Upon arrival on scene officers located two females and one male individual at the address and began an investigation. It was determined that the male individual, Quamaine Butler, of Estherville had assaulted one of the females.

During the investigation, officers determined that the female victim had arrived at the residence to give Butler a ride to his vehicle. According to witnesses, Butler reached into the car to take the keys from the victim’s vehicle. Butler grabbed the victim’s hand, then put his arm around her neck and started to choke her. Butler then began to bite the victim on her head and neck area. Officers were able to observe minor injuries to these areas. The victim told the second female to contact emergency service. The second female took the phone from the victim and attempted to contact emergency services. Butler then knocked the phone from her hand. The phone hit the ground causing damage to the screen of the phone. A third party was finally able to contact law enforcement.

After speaking with the individuals involved officers attempted to place Butler under arrest. Butler then fled the scene on foot and officers pursued Butler on foot. Butler was located a short time later hiding behind a shed in the 500 block of South 9th Street. Butler was taken into custody and transported to the Emmet County Law Center.

Butler was charged with Domestic Abuse 3rd a Class D Felony, Domestic with Strangulation Impeding Breathing a Class D Felony, Simple Assault a Simple Misdemeanor, Obstruction of Emergency Communication a Simple Misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief 5th Degree a Simple Misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts a Simple Misdemeanor. Butler is being held at the Emmet County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
