Theresa Greenfield wins Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Iowa, will face Joni Ernst

DES MOINES – Theresa Greenfield, the pick of the Democratic Washington establishment, defeated the field in Tuesday night’s primary election and will face off against Republican Joni Ernst for the right to be a U.S. Senator from Iowa.

Theresa Greenfield, who calls herself a “farm kid,” is a metro Des Moines real estate professional who had the backing of Elizabeth Warren and the national Democratic Party.  She rolled up at least 129,706 votes. Admiral Mike Franken was second with 67,862 while Kimberly Graham tallied 40,738. Democrats rolled up 272,003 votes statewide for Senator, while Rebublican Joni Ernst, who ran unopposed in her primary, got 225,841.

Iowa saw significant changes in voter registration totals since May 1, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate recently announced. “For the first time in many years, both Republicans and Democrats outnumber No Party voters,” he said, while releasing the following numbers:

D- 674,456 (+31,580)
R- 669,503 (+35,910)
NP- 639,503 (-64,098)

This could be another razor-close election in November as Ernst is a fairly unpopular Republican incumbent who is a close ally of President Donald Trump. Her favorability among Iowa voters has dropped from 57% to 47% in the last year, according to reports.

Pollsters still rate this election as “leaning Republican” but with the current volatility in American society, anything is possible.  Thirty-three Senate seats are on the table in November; Republicans hold a 53-45 advantage there (2 Independent) at the moment as Democrats seek to take control (they already control the House of Representatives.)
