FORT DODGE – Up to 40 gunshots were fired in Fort Dodge Thursday evening as police scramble to find the culprits.

Fort Dodge police say that on Thursday, May 7 at approximately 8:15 P.M., the Webster County Telecommunications Center received multiple calls regarding shots fired in the area of the 800 block of South 15th Street in Fort Dodge. Information given indicated several individuals, estimated to be between fifteen and twenty years old, were involved and fleeing the area.

As officers arrived, they received reports of a vehicle that had crashed in the 1300 block of Mason Drive. Officers located an unoccupied 2014 Chevrolet Impala that had sustained significant damage from a crash, as well as what appeared to be bullet holes. As officers discovered that vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Journey was located in the 1600 block of 8th Ave South that had sustained damage from gunfire.

The initial investigation suggests that two groups of individuals fired at each other in the 1400 block of 8th Avenue South. At this time, it is estimated there were approximately forty (40) shots fired in this incident. Both vehicles located were occupied at the time of the shooting and fled the area before becoming disabled. In addition, property damage was located to a residence and vehicle that were not involved in the incident. No injuries were reported.

The Fort Dodge Police Department continued to investigate this incident throughout the evening and has continued into today. We encourage anyone who may have information on this incident to contact police. A 17‐year‐old male was taken into custody during the investigation on an unrelated criminal charge.

The Fort Dodge Police Department was assisted on scene by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
