OBIT: Alva “Jim” Straw, 88, of Charles City

Alva “Jim” Straw, 88, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2020 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A private family service will be held at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home with Pastor Debra Lincoln of United Church of Christ of Colwell officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Alva “Jim” James Straw, the son of Alvin and Dorothy (Loos) Straw, was born on April 29, 1931 in New Hampton. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Sedgwick in April 1972.
Jim worked for Bazuke Salvage Yard in Charles City and later as a maintenance worker for the Chautauqua Guest Homes until his retirement. Jim loved listening to polka music and loved to work with his hands. He was a talented woodworker and crafted clocks, wooden barns, and rocking horses for his grandchildren. He also welded metals and made a horseless carriage that he would often drive around in parades.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Evelyn; stepson, Paul (Sue) Sedgwick of Charles City; grandsons: Mike (Mary Beth) Sedgwick of Big Timber, Montana, Doug (Shelley) Sedgwick of Waverly, Brian (Mellisa) Sedgwick of Waverly; great-grandchildren: Ashley and (Laton) Felton of St. Louis, Missouri, and Sophie, Ian, Caden, Lilah Sedgwick of Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
