UNI men’s basketball defeats Missouri State, 95-66

CEDAR FALLS – The UNI men’s basketball team moved to 18-3 overall and 7-2 in the MVC after defeating the Bears of Missouri State 95-66 Wednesday night at the McLeod Center.

The Panthers opened the game hot, making their first five field-goal attempts of the game. UNI moved ahead by 20 entering halftime, leading the Bears 51-31 for their largest lead of the game. As a team, UNI shot 54.8% from the field and 56.3% from beyond the arc. On the defensive end, the Panthers forced the Bears to commit 9 first-half turnovers.

AJ Green led all scorers and rebounders with 13 points and 6 boards after 20 minutes of play. Austin Phyfe netted 12 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the field, Trae Berhow also finished the first half with 12 points, going 4-6 from beyond the arc. Isaiah Brown finished the first half with 8 assists, a new career-high and one shy of a McLeod Center record for assists in a game.

The Panthers finished were they left off to open the second half, stretching the largest lead of the game to 29 and winning the second half 44-35. UNI dominated on the offensive end, shooting 58.1% from the field and 53.1% from beyond the arc. The Panthers finished with five double-digit scorers.

AJ Green led all scorers and finished with 27 points and 6 rebounds. Austin Phyfe scored 17 points going a perfect 7-7 from the field and hauled in 7 boards. Isaiah Brown had a huge second half on the offensive end, scoring 16 points and finishing with a new career-high 9 assists tieing the McLeod Center record. Trae Berhow also tallied 16 points going 6-9 from the field and 4-7 from three, Spencer Haldeman scored 12 points and grabbed 7 boards.

The Panthers, now 18-3 overall, will hit the road for a Saturday evening game against the Aces of Evansville. The Aces are 9-13 overall and 0-9 in the MVC. Saturday’s game will tip-off at 1 p.m. and can be viewed on the MVC TV Network.
