IRVIN, Texas – UNI senior wrestler Taylor Lujan was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after winning the title at the Midlands Championship and earning a major decision win in the Panthers’ dual against Utah Valley.
Lujan went 5-0 at the Midlands Championship, including two pins in the opening rounds, two wins over ranked opponents and a 4-0 shutout against Iowa’s Abe Assad in the championship match.
He also had wins against No. 14 Johnny Sebastian of Wisconsin and No. 11 Andrew Morgan of Campbell.
Against Utah Valley, he recorded 10 takedowns to earn a 25-9 win over Jacob Armstrong to help the Panthers pick up the 32-12 victory to start Big 12 action.
The honor is the first of the season and the fourth of his career. He joins Bryce Steiert who won the weekly award after a strong performance at the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas.
UNI hosts South Dakota State (Friday – 7 p.m.) and Missouri (Sunday – 2 p.m.) in a pair of duals in the West Gym.
