Female inmate in Iowa prison dies of suicide

MITCHELLVILLE – A female inmate in an Iowa prison was found dead Wednesday, apparently of suicide, officials say.

Kimberly Nicole Battle was pronounced dead due to apparent suicide at 3:06 p.m. yesterday at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women. Battle was 27 years old at the time of her death.

Battle had been serving a 4-year maximum sentence for the crime of Assault Causing Injury- Peace Officer (708.3A[3]) from Buchanan County. Her incarceration began on March 1, 2019.

Whenever a suspected suicide occurs, the State or County Medical Examiner conducts an autopsy and the department conducts an investigation into the incident.

    Another senseless death of a person who would’ve been better monitored and managed if she’d have remained at the Independence MHI instead of a prison.
