Police encounter armed men during Mason City traffic stop

MASON CITY – One armed man fled and a Mason City man with a sawed-off shotgun was arrested during a Mason City traffic stop Friday night.

On December 6, 2019, at about 8:50 PM, a Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Deputy made a traffic stop in the 900 block of North Adams Avenue in Mason City for an equipment violation. During the stop, a sawed off, pistol grip rifle could be seen in plain view, next to the back seat passenger. While attending to the two passengers, the driver of the vehicle fled on foot. The driver was identified as Marcus Houston Jones, 31, of St. Paul, MN. When Jones exited the vehicle, a loaded .45 caliber handgun was dropped onto the ground. Jones was not captured immediately and warrants for his arrest have been filed for carrying weapons, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and interference with official acts.

Anyone with information about Jones’ location is asked to call law enforcement. He should be considered armed.

The back seat passenger was arrested at the scene and identified as Carlos Levelle Cooper, 35, of Mason City. Cooper was charged with carrying weapons, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and 3rd offense possession of marijuana. Cooper was taken to the Cerro Gordo County jail and held for bond.

The third male occupant was not charged with any crimes relating to this incident.

Mason City Police assisted at the scene.
