DES MOINES – AFSCME Council 61 President Danny Homan issued the following statement after compiling the facts surrounding the May 29, 2019 assault on a staff member at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) in Coralville:
“After reviewing the details of the assault that took place on May 29, 2019 at IMCC, it is clear that this incident was not only preventable, but also indicative of a dangerous trend of prioritizing inmate independence over staff safety. The inmate who attacked a support staff member was previously charged with ‘assault with intent to commit sexual abuse – bodily injury’ at the Newton Correctional Facility, where he was previously held prior to being moved to IMCC. Given this history of violent sexual behavior, why was this inmate allowed to walk freely into the office of this employee and request a piece of paper, only to hold her up against a wall with his hand over her mouth while she fought him off? To make matters worse, this same inmate was discovered wandering around the same area the day before, undoubtedly planning his attack, and was simply asked to leave. When the inmate heard calls for assistance during the assault, he took off running and, due to dangerously low staffing levels, was stopped by counselors, rather than correctional officers. He was then placed in the mental health unit, rather than administrative segregation.

“The Warden, Jim McKinney, has also decided to implement a dangerous policy of forcing nurses to deliver medications on a unit with one correctional officer present, rather than behind a window, as other correctional facilities do. Nurses have expressed their fear of going on units with a cart full of medications and only one officer to intervene in an attack, but the Warden has refused to prioritize their safety.
“Between dangerously low staffing levels and a prioritization of inmate privileges over staff safety, employees within IMCC report morale being at an all-time low.”
mckinney sounds like a real pos, guess the mckinney appls fall right at the base of the tree. known a few in my life, wouldnt piss on one to put a fire out. in fact id search for diesel.
except its not just the nurses. its the guards too. not saying they shouldnt have considered the reality of their job before excepting it…… but. i can see how these nurses are pissed. you can become the victim of so many horrible things in that environment. are none of you related to anyone in the medical field? how can you be so dismissive about their struggle? would you like to work in an environment filled with mentally unstable socially broken diseased violent jerkoffs? risking infection or assault everyday? for how much money? personally they havent even invented the number that would make me consider it myself or allow someone close to me to do it. their job is probably alot more complex than you think. you remember the teacher or assistant that had to deal with the rejects in school when you were a kid? you know the lady, the one with bite marks on her hands and forearms from wrangling the idiot riddlin kids and other spastics? well. those little nap time crew meds taking psychos didnt just turn 18 and become well adjusted. some poor women is in the trenches with those same freaks but now they have taken to self medicating with amphetamines and lifting weights, probably have a domestic or two under their belt, comfortable hitting women and its not like they became more intelligent compassionate happy people while the system has been doing its best to hold them down so they repeat the cycle of monitored freedom and incarceration time and again til they stroke out at 43 due to drug and alcohol related illness. its a stressful job and if they all quit tomorrow i wouldnt blame them. it does say something however about someones mental state when they choose to work in a prison… its not a nice environment conducive to the production of positive mental health. anyone that would choose to spend hours a day their either has some serious hate toward men and likes seeing them caged or they have some other deranged mental illness they are using the cage to work through. besides if you guys wanna bitch about a union, go bitch about bernie wanting to unionise mcdonalds workers and pay them $15 an hr. if that happens im quitting my job to become a self employed person, mugging mcdonalds workers on payday because in no way do they deserve that shit at the cost of the entire economy.
I sense envy, and jealousy here. One could always apply for a government job, but then one would have to get up before noon, and give up the monthly welfare checks. Nah, it’s much easier sucking off the government. Bernie, 2020
If they don’t like their jobs why don’t they just quit. They love the paycheck and benefits, but not the work. Typical union workers.
God, I get so tired of hearing those union people whine. If it’s not high wages, great benefits, and not doing any work, those people are never happy.
Look who’s whining now
Yeah, complaining about threats on your life is just whiny shit. You are a idiot.
