Iowa man – allegedly intoxicated – reaches speeds of 110 mpg in eluding cops near Waverly

WAVERLY – An Iowa man desperate wantend to avoid capture early Thursday morning near Waverly as he allegedly drove drunk on the Avenue of the Saints, reaching speeds of 110 miles per hour then running on foot before he was captured.

On June 6, 2019 at approximately 7:32 AM, a Bremer County Deputy attempted to stop a silver Chevrolet Impala for a speeding violation (82 in a 65 mph zone) southbound on Highway 218 west of Waverly. Once the deputy caught back up to the vehicle it was traveling 106 mph. The vehicle failed to stop and fled south on Highway 218 into Black Hawk County reaching speeds of 110 mph. The vehicle then continued south on Highway 58 and drove east into oncoming traffic on E. Ridgway Avenue. The vehicle then went back west and crashed into a fence at Camping World. Dekota Phillip Newlon, age 23 of Cedar Rapids, then fled on foot, and attempted to hide in a camper.

Newlon was caught and taken into custody and transported to the Bremer County Jail. He is charged with: Operating While Intoxicated, Fail to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle, Excessive Speed, Driving While License Suspended, and Reckless Driving. The Cedar Falls Police Department also charged him with Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree. He is currently being held in the Bremer County Jail.

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Falls Police Department, Waterloo Police Department, and Mercy One Ambulance.
