Iowa double-murder suspect caught hiding in Cedar Rapids garage

CEDAR RAPIDS – A suspect who had an arrest warrant for his involvement in the shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Iowa Smoke Shop, 70 Kirkwood Court SW, on Saturday, May 18 was apprehended this morning. Andre Defaunte Richardson, age 26, was arrested for two counts of Murder-1st Degree.

At approximately 10:59 a.m. this morning, the United States Marshals Service Task Force and Cedar Rapids police officers located Richardson in the 300 block of 22nd Avenue SW. The suspect fled on foot from officers and was located hiding in a garage at 299 21st Avenue SW. A Cedar Rapids Police Department K9 assisted in the apprehension. Richardson was taken into custody at 11:15 a.m.
The shooting incident occurred in the Iowa Smoke Shop parking lot at 70 Kirkwood Court SW shortly after 1:20 a.m. Saturday, May 18. Four victims sustained gunshot wounds in the incident. Matrell Michael Eu’gene Johnson, DOB/06-11-2000, age 18 and Royal Ceiz Abram, DOB/03-27-2001, age 18, died as a result of the shooting. Two other victims, including a 19-year old male and a 19-year old female, remain hospitalized.

Richardson was arrested for two counts of Murder-1st Degree, two counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Going Armed with Intent.

There is still an active, ongoing investigation. The Cedar Rapids Police Department continues to work with the Linn County Attorney’s Office on this case.
