Douglas J. Nelson, 76, of Charles City died January 10, 2019, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. A family and friends graveside service will be held at a future date at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Doug was born June 11, 1942, to Kenneth and Ethel Nelson in Edgewood, Iowa. He graduated from Marion High School in 1960.

He met the love of his life, Jerri Ellery, in Cedar Rapids, and they were married on September 15, 1962. They made their home in Charles City, Grand Ledge MI, Tipton, and then returned to Charles City, which they always considered home. Doug worked at Salisbury Laboratories, then worked for various ag sales companies, and later retired from Kraft Foods in Mason City. He was always giving of his time and talents, serving for some time as a volunteer fireman, driving the van for Floyd County veterans, helping friends and neighbors, and he was a very active member of Trinity United, Methodist Church of Charles City.

He enjoyed watching the wildlife out his picture window, kayaking, fishing and hunting with family and friends, and taking occasional day trips to the casino and adventuring to the Minnesota North Shore, Wisconsin, and even Alaska. Most of all, he treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always had stories and humorous sayings he loved to share with them.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, DeNeitt (Dale) VanDenBroeke of Spirit Lake; son, Bret (Tina) Nelson of Vinton; grandsons, Derick (Gwen) VanDenBroeke, Devin (Tiff) VanDenBroeke, Tanner (Alison) Nelson, Justin (Meaghan) Nelson and Dalton Nelson and fiancé, Madison; great-grandchildren, Ally, Oliver, Dillon, Clara, Anniko and Hannah; sister, Janet Cords and sister-in-law, Ervine Nelson; along with other family members and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Jerri, his parents; sisters Bertha Cornwell and Vera Cole; brother, Ronald Nelson; father and mother-in-law, L.R. (Budd) and Donna Jean Ellery; brother-in-law Gary (Skip) Ellery and sister-in-law DiOnna Ellery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Floyd County Veterans Affairs Volunteer Van Drivers program, or to a charity of your choice.
