OBIT: Marcella Dena (Meyer) Doak

Marcella Dena Doak, 95, of Grundy Center, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2018, at Grundy Center Care Center in Grundy Center, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 10:30 AM, at Grundy Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Miller officiating. A memorial gathering will be held an hour prior at the church. Inurnment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church or to Cedar Valley Hospice. Abels Funeral and Cremation Service Engelkes-Chapel is taking care of Marcella and her family.

Marcella Dena Doak was born on March 22, 1923, in Grundy Center, IA, to her parents Marcus and Harmina (Kruse) Meyer. Marcella attended Palermo #4, later attending Grundy Center High School, graduating with the class of 1941. She went on to obtain her teaching certificate and taught for 7 years in rural schools in Grundy County. Marcella was united in marriage on December 22, 1945, to Lyle Doak. Lyle and Marcella made their home on the farm west of Grundy Center where she loved working beside Lyle. Marcella helped on the farm until they moved to an acreage west of Grundy Center in 1981. She also worked at the Spokesman Press and part-time for Collectors News.

Marcella enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, bowling, golfing, playing Bridge and Pepper, and Bingo. She was an avid supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and loved keeping up on the team’s roster and stats. Marcella was a member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Marcella is survived by her loving daughter Vicki (Alan) Rewerts of Pella; grandson Brett (Wendy) Rewerts; sisters Doris Kuhlman, Anna Mae Klaassen, and Wava Jean (Jake) Hemmen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, sister Iva Dell Getting, brother Merle Meyer, brother-in-laws Bill Kuhlman, Eldon Klaassen, and Virgil Getting, sister-in-law Agnes Meyer.
