IOWA CITY – The Iowa men’s basketball team beat Western Carolina, 78-60, Tuesday night in Iowa City.

Junior Tyler Cook led the #21 Hawkeyes in scoring for the fifth straight contest, netting 18 points tonight versus Western Carolina.

“Our mentality stays the same every day, that mentality is to get better each day,” Cook said after the game.

Iowa’s defense forced a season-high 26 turnovers and eight blocked shots. Nicolas Baer rejected a game and season-best four shots.

Forward Luka Garza scored 15 points, but pointed to freshman guard Joe Wieskamp’s effort, saying he “contributes to the game in so many ways. He brings a lot of effort and energy. He’s either blocking a shot or making a basket, you know when he’s on the court.”

Iowa improved to 9-0 in nonconference games this season. Iowa improved to 3-0 all-time against Western Carolina.

The Hawkeyes improved to 69-2 when holding opponents to 61 points or less over the last nine seasons.

Iowa returns to action Saturday in a nonconference contest against Savannah State. Tipoff is set for 12:01 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
