DAVENPORT, IOWA – A man who distributed letters threatening “swift and bloody” action in Davenport, Iowa against certain groups of people and claimed to work for Lee Enterprises has been identified and charged with a crime, police say.
According to Davenport, Iowa police, on September 4, 2018, they conducted an interview with an 20-year-old Adam Mayber of Wonder Lake, Illinois, who claimed on social media to work for Lee Enterprises, which is over $400 million in debt and owns the Globe Gazette in Mason City. Mayber wanted to turn himself in, police say, as the author of the Night Lion post. This is in reference to numerous letters reportedly posted in a Davenport neighborhood in recent days that promised “The city of Davenport will soon bear witness to the to the swift and bloody hands of the Night Lion’s justice,” aimed at “the homeless, the addicts, the gang members and the like.”
Mayber allegedly told police that the Night Lion is the main character of his fictional novel that he is trying to get published and that the postings were done as a marketing effort to get people of the area familiarized with his work and character. Mayber stated that it was not intended to be threatening or concerning to people. The investigation indicates that there are no public safety threats associated with this incident, police said in a statement. They say this case is considered closed and Mayber has been cited for Disorderly Conduct in relation to this incident.
Mayber posted on social media on August 20 that he started a new job at Lee Enterprises, a newspaper company that owns the Globe Gazette in Mason City, is hundreds of millions of dollars in debt and makes newspapers that keep shrinking with dwindling circulation. He claims to have quit his job at Lee in the wake of his alleged actions.
