Mason City man leads law enforcement on high-speed chase before surrendering in Worth county

NORTHWOOD – A Mason City man lead law enforcement on a high-speed chase before surrendering in Winnebago county.

On August 28, 2018 at approximately 10:51 PM, a deputy with the Worth County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Blue 2003 Ford Escape being operated by 58 year old Phillip Abbott of Mason City that was not displaying plates and was excessively speeding at the intersection of Wheelerwood Road and 420th St. The deputy initiated his lights and siren and the vehicle accelerated further and continued traveling southbound on Wheelerwood Road. A multi-county pursuit ensued that resulted in Abbot nearly striking another Worth County deputy and his vehicle with his vehicle while the deputy had him at gun point attempting to block the road. The chase lasted approximately 30 minutes and ended when Abbot drove the vehicle into the parking lot of the Winnebago County Jail and was taken into custody.

Abbot was charged with Eluding Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, Failure to Obey a Stop Sign, Driving While Suspended, Speeding, Expired Registration, No Insurance, Driving on the Wrong Side of a Two Lane Highway, and Unsafe Passing.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Mills Police Department, Forest City Police Department and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

ABBOTT, PHILLIP FRANKLIN

Must have been having a senior moment. Lucky he didn’t kill anybody.

Nothing compared to what some local elected officials are lining their pockets with – CASH talks and political bullchit stays in worth a less county.

Reminds one of a hold out from a bygone day. Screw the $250 tow truck scammers. In Cahoots with the copper. And if they found cash in the glove box they would take it. Not buying it. Guess it not a crime to be crooked in your ways anymore. Wonder if their selling his car now to drum up more money to pay for things that their budget can’t afford.

So, is Phil a drinkin’ buddy or kin to you?

No, don’t believe I ever met the guy. And I don’t buy into over zealous law enforcement in general. Each state has it’s own and not all are equal in the ways they chose to put it into practice. The police force in and around Mason City was very different in the past. Like night and day. It seems there are more abuses nowadays against citizens than before. That money plays a factor in this is obvious. Being on the ‘books’ as they call it ensnares people in an endless cycle of sending the county/city payments or else. Isn’t this what you call contempt of court charges that the jails are filled with right at the moment. There are some states that will take your DNA for a very minor offense. It’s illegal but they do it anyways. A nation under the control of a ‘police state’ is a bad idea. #freephil lol
