WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst of Iowa today released the following statement regarding the announcement from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation on the murder of Mollie Tibbetts, a University of Iowa student who disappeared on July 18, and the arrest of a suspect believed to be residing in the U.S. illegally.
“We are deeply saddened that this bright, young woman’s life was cut short. Our heart goes out to the family and friends of Mollie Tibbetts. No family should ever have to endure such a tragedy, especially one that could have been prevented. We are thankful for the hard work of Governor Reynolds and federal, state and local law enforcement as they continue to find answers for Mollie’s family and the American public and bring the killer to justice. As Governor Reynolds said, ‘our immigration system allowed a predator like this to live in our community.’ Too many Iowans have been lost at the hands of criminals who broke our immigration laws. We cannot allow these tragedies to continue.”
Ernst introduced and Grassley cosponsored Sarah’s Law, legislation named in honor of another young Iowa woman, Sarah Root, who was killed in 2016 by an illegal immigrant. Sarah’s Law would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to take custody of an individual who is in the country illegally and is charged with a crime resulting in the death or serious bodily injury of another person. It would also amend the mandatory detention provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act to require the federal government to take custody of anyone who entered the country illegally, violated the terms of their immigration status, or had their visa revoked and is thereafter charged with a crime resulting in the death or serious bodily injury of another person.
Does anyone remember when Mason City’s Chamber of commerce wanted to bring these types of people by the thousands? Because I do. This would have been a weakly occurrence in North Iowa news.

This will finish the Democrats in the upcoming elections. Never have I seen a public official bullied like the president has been. He upset the apple cart and many are none to happy about it. Many states have had similar tragedies over the past couple years involving the death of a young girl at the hands of an illegal from Mexico. But this is in our state of Iowa now. Mollie Tibbetts was the girl next store. The one you see everyday. This is so very sad. It makes one feel really bad inside. Minorities commit the majority of senseless taking of life. And that’s a fact. Just look at the prisons. More and more it does appear the Democrats are in the wrong. Troublemakers!
Why are you happy that such a tragic event ‘might’ “finish the Democrats…” ? I can imagine you waiting out the 30+ days she was gone hoping that when the culprit was caught either you knew him (more gossip time), a liberal (which I am sure you can tell by skin color or name) or an undocumented person. An AP story published by the Chicago Tribune, tells a different view; ICE has probable cause to detain this man, a move that means the agency thinks he is subject to deportation.
In addition, in another AP article also published by the Tribune, this man worked under a false name, using a false ID and Social Security number to get hired according to his employer, Yarrabee Farms.
(Don’t expect this information to be published in the Globe, they are too busy trying to sell $5 news papers, which by the way, did not sell a single copy in at least two retail outlets)
Observer, you are correct in that he used a false i.d. However, his employer allowed him to work and didn’t do their due diligence when they hired him. I am pretty sure right now every employee they have hired who is Hispanic is being vetted carefully right now because Yarrabee farms uses a large number of immigrants in their operation.
