All-American Hawkeye heavyweight wrestler Stoll accidentally shot in knee

IOWA CITY – All-American Hawkeye heavyweight wrestler Sam Stoll was accidentally shot in the knee early Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at 4:37 AM, Iowa City police officers responded to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on a report of a gunshot victim who appeared at UIHC for treatment.

A preliminary investigation revealed that several individuals were in a residence on Valley Avenue in Iowa City when a subject discharged a firearm, accidentally striking the victim in the knee. The victim, identified as Samuel Paul Stoll, 21, of Iowa City, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing, police say. The seriousness of the injury was not made public.

Stoll is an All-American heavyweight wrestler for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The University Of Iowa Athletics Department issued a statement on the matter, saying only, “We are aware of the situation involving Sam Stoll and are currently gathering additional information at this time.”

Later, University of Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands issued a statement on the incident involving Sam:

“Sam Stoll underwent successful surgery yesterday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and has since been released. He is doing well and that is great news. His health was our number one concern. We are still gathering information and once the police investigation is complete we will follow all University and Athletics Department code of conduct policies.”
